Trip Management in elta AI
Plan ahead, stay connected, and ensure help finds you when it matters
What is Trip Management?
Trip Management is elta AI's comprehensive safety planning feature for longer activities and adventures. Create a trip with your itinerary, assign emergency contacts, check in when you arrive, and check out when you're done. If you don't check out on time, your contacts are automatically alerted.
It's like leaving a detailed note with someone who will actually follow up.
When to Use Trip Management
- Hiking and backpacking trips
- Road trips and long drives
- Solo travel to new cities
- Camping and outdoor adventures
- Business trips
- Visiting unfamiliar neighborhoods
- Any activity lasting several hours or days
- Multi-stop journeys where you want accountability at each stage
How It Works
Step 1: Create a Trip
Tap New Trip and fill in the details:
- Trip name — Give it a recognizable title (e.g., "Weekend at Yosemite")
- Destination — Where you're headed
- Start and end dates — When you're leaving and when you expect to return
- Notes — Trail names, hotel addresses, flight numbers, or any details that could help in an emergency
Step 2: Assign Emergency Contacts
Choose which contacts should be notified for this specific trip. Different trips can have different contacts — your hiking buddy for outdoor adventures, your partner for work travel.
Step 3: Check In When You Arrive
Once you reach your destination or start your activity, open elta AI app and tap Check In. Set your expected checkout time — this is when you plan to be done or safely back.
Step 4: Check Out When Complete
When you've finished your trip or reached safety, tap Check Out. Your contacts see that you're safe, and the trip closes cleanly.
Step 5: Automatic Alert If You Don't Check Out
If your checkout time passes and you haven't marked yourself safe, elta AI sends an alert to your assigned emergency contacts with your trip details, last known location, and instructions to check on you.
What Your Contacts Receive
When a check-out is missed, your emergency contacts get:
- Notification that you haven't checked out as expected
- Your complete trip details (destination, notes, itinerary)
- Your last known GPS location
- Your profile information and any medical details you've chosen to share
- Clear instructions on next steps
Check-In Best Practices
Be specific with your checkout time — If your hike usually takes 4 hours, set checkout for 5 hours to give yourself buffer
Add detailed notes — Trail names, campsite numbers, hotel addresses, and car descriptions help rescuers find you faster
Update as plans change — If you decide to extend your trip, update your checkout time before it expires
Check in at each stage — For multi-day trips, check in and out each day rather than setting one long timer
Verify your contacts — Make sure your emergency contacts have confirmed they can receive alerts
Trip Management vs. Quick Timer
| Trip Management | Quick Timer |
|---|---|
| Detailed planning with itinerary | One-tap simplicity |
| Best for hours or days | Best for minutes to an hour |
| Includes destinations and notes | Location-only |
| Assign specific contacts per trip | Uses your default contacts |
| Check-in and check-out flow | Single countdown |
| Ideal for adventures and travel | Ideal for daily routines |
Use Trip Management when you want thorough documentation and planning. Use Quick Timer for quick, everyday protection.
Example Scenarios
Scenario 1: Day Hike Alex creates a trip called "Mt. Tamalpais Solo Hike" with notes including the trailhead name and car location. He checks in at 8 AM with a 2 PM checkout. He finishes at 1:30 PM and checks out. His sister sees he's safe and goes about her day.
Scenario 2: Weekend Camping Priya plans a two-night camping trip. She creates a trip with campground details and her friend as emergency contact. Each morning she checks in with an evening checkout time. On the final day, she checks out when she reaches cell service on the drive home.
Scenario 3: Delayed Return Jordan is hiking and realizes the trail is longer than expected. Before his checkout time expires, he opens elta app and extends his checkout by 2 hours. No false alarm, no worried contacts.
Scenario 4: Emergency Situation Mei slips on a remote trail and injures her leg. She can't make it back to her car. When her checkout time passes without confirmation, her emergency contact receives her trip details and last GPS coordinates. They contact search and rescue with exact location information.
Creating Effective Trip Notes
Good trip notes can be the difference between a quick rescue and a prolonged search. Include:
- Specific locations — Trailhead names, campsite numbers, hotel addresses
- Vehicle details — Car make, model, color, and where you parked
- Route information — Which trails, roads, or paths you're taking
- Gear description — What you're wearing, tent color, pack description
- Alternate plans — "If weather is bad, I'll take the shorter loop instead"
- Health considerations — Allergies, medications, conditions responders should know
The Check-In / Check-Out Flow
